West Chester University - Collegiate Students

Danielle Molan   Matthew Harris

Matthew has performed in masterclass for Jack Winerock and Nelita True. He was also the winner of the keyboard division sophomore scholarship as well as several community-based scholarships. Matt’s recent repertoire includes Debussy’s Reflets dans l’Eau  and Chopin’s Etude in C Minor, Op. 25, No. 12. An active member of the WCU’s collegiate chapter of the MTNA, he is currently a voice major in the music education program, and also studies organ.

Danielle graduated in 2008 with an undergraduate degree in music education, and hopes to pursue a career in choral conducting. While at WCU, she won many scholarships, including Jacob’s Music Steinway Award. She was also soloist with the WCU Symphony Orchestra, performing the first movement of Prokofiev’s Piano Concerto #3.

“Looking back at myself 4 ½ years ago, I never would have dreamed of being half the pianist I am today. You have pushed me to reach my fullest potential. Thank you so much for all of your support, guidance, knowledge, understanding and inspiration. I lucked out big time by getting you as a teacher at WCU! I will definitely take with me everything you have taught me thus far, and I look forward to sharing that knowledge with future students of my own.”

Billy Schultz
Currently a business major at WCU, Billy is also a seriously dedicated jazz musician. He is a member of the Criterions Big Band, which recently recorded a CD and also performed at Blues Alley in Washington, D.C.  Billy frequently plays with his own jazz trio in many local venues.

Keith Roberts
Winner of the Patti S. Wiggins Scholarship, Keith is a Music Education piano major. He is also in the Statesmen jazz ensemble and performs on euphonium in the marching band. Not only an excellent classical and jazz pianist, Keith is also a seasoned performer in the singer/songwriter genre. He is much in demand as an accompanist for both singers and instrumentalists.

Daniel Townsend
Dan is a sophomore double major in Theory/Composition and Music Education. He is also a member of the Statesmen jazz ensemble and the newly formed Latin Jazz Ensemble at WCU, which has already given several performances to rave reviews. When not working on perfecting his Latin montunos, Dan can be heard in excellent performances of  classical repertoire including Etude-Tableau in G Minor by Rachmaninoff, Haydn’s Sonata in E Minor, Hob. XVI:34 and his own compostions.

West Chester University - Community Music School Students

 Jason Matthews   Andrew Knauer

A senior at Great Valley High School, Andrew began formal piano instruction only a year ago, in the spring of 2007. His rapid progress has enabled him to tackle the first movement of Beethoven’s “Tempest” sonata this semester. Andrew also enjoys improvising and composing at the piano. He plans to attend University of Connecticut as a biology major in the fall, and also to continue his keyboard studies.

A student at Unionville High School, Jason has received many accolades for his performances. He recently won the piano chair for the PMEA All-State Vocal Jazz Ensemble; their concert featured a special presentation by Jason and the jazz trio. His composition Impromptu won third prize in the Keystone Composition Competition.
He has been awarded Best Soloist in several area jazz band adjudications. Jason’s own band, Dogo Wazo, performs original and standard jazz compositions in many area venues; they have a large local following.

Priscilla Chao
Ben Wofford

Priscilla is a dedicated pianist who manages to fit in her practicing despite a demanding job; she is responsible for the imaging system at the VA Hospital in Baltimore. Priscilla is currently studying works by Scarlatti, Dello Joio and Bartok. Priscilla  also travels extensively, and grows her own roses. "With your guidance and understanding, I have improved so much in the past two and half years.  I never imagined to play with memory.  Thank you!"

Currently working on Debussy’s La Cathédrale Engloutie, Ben has been studying piano forfour years. He recently performed an etude of Donald Waxman’s for the composer in a masterclass at the PMTA conference. He also had the opportunity to perform on the unique, specially designed Steinway Peace Piano during the WCU stop of its national tour. As the grandson of Senator Harris Wofford, it is no surprise that Ben is very active politically; when not at the piano, he is hard at work on the Obama campaign. He has also won many scholastic awards at his school. Emma Sargent

Doug Friese

Currently in her first year of lessons, Emma is a student of great imagination and has already appeared on several recitals---like Hannah, always stylishly dressed! She is a student at Episcopal Academy.

Ellis Jacoby

Doug currently serves as drum major at East High School, and is also an accomplished jazz saxophonist. He frequently wins Best Soloist award at area jazz band adjudications. Recent repertoire performed includes Liszt’s La Chapelle de Guillaume Tell, and also Doug’s original arrangement of the Weather Report classic “Birdland”. Doug will be traveling to China this summer as part of the American Music Abroad program. He plans to pursue a music major in college.

Although his skateboard misadventures occasionally require him to miss lessons, Ellis is an enthusiastic piano student, and a performer with great flair. He also plays the trombone and is active in his school band program.

Rachel Jacoby

Heather Jones
As a scientist working for Merck, Heather has been instrumental in developing the Guardasil vaccine for cervical cancer. She brings the same discipline to her piano studies, recently performing Albeniz’ Evocaçion, as well as several Chopin preludes and waltzes.
Lindsay Bayne     Rachel has been studying the piano for several years; recent pieces include Bach’s Invention in A Minor, and Dello Joio’s Small Fry, which Rachel performed in recital with her dad adding a part on the conga drum. In addition to being a fine pianist, Rachel is in her school colorguard, and also plays the violin.
A student at Bishop Shanahan High School, Lindsay recently performed an etude of Donald Waxman’s for the composer at a masterclass during the PMTA conference. She is currently working on Bach’s Invention #1 in C Major, as well as sonata movements by Mozart. Her brother Brennan also recently started piano lessons. Hopefully, we can look forward to the two of them developing  into a formidable four-hand team!

Hannah Block

Christian Klinefelter

In her first year of study, Hannah has performed works by Gurlitt and Jeremiah Clark. A performer with great poise, Hannah recently appeared in her school talent show, playing “My Favorite Things” in an ensemble with her friends.
